Kornberg School of Dentistry - Learning Commons 388

Temple University

Philadelphia, PA

Temple University sought to expand flexible teaching and collaboration spaces within the historic Old Dental School building to support the evolving educational needs of the Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry. O Z Collaborative renovated approximately 4,700 square feet on the third floor of the century-old building to create the Old Dental School Learning Commons Center, a multi-purpose academic environment designed to support a range of teaching and learning formats.

The new learning commons is organized as two flexible classrooms separated by an operable partition, allowing the space to function as either a single large room or two independent teaching environments. This flexibility allows instructors to adapt the space for lectures, group learning, and collaborative instruction. Advanced audiovisual systems were integrated throughout the rooms to support contemporary teaching technologies and digital learning tools used across the university.

Interior materials were carefully selected to create a clean and durable learning environment. Finishes, lighting, furniture, and acoustical treatments were coordinated to support both comfort and acoustic clarity within the classrooms. The resulting space is flexible, contemporary, and adaptable, providing the Kornberg School of Dentistry with a teaching environment that supports a variety of instructional methods and collaborative learning activities.
