One year after completion, Old First House stands as a compelling example of how historic preservation, sustainable design, and supportive housing can work together to address homelessness in Philadelphia. Located in the heart of Old City, the project builds on the long-standing mission of the Old First Reformed United Church of Christ, which has served the community continuously since its founding in 1727.

This Black History Month, OZ Collaborative recognizes Black architects whose work continues to shape Philadelphia’s neighborhoods and civic life. Their influence lives not only in famous landmark buildings, but in the standards they set for access, excellence, and public impact.

O Z Collaborative, in partnership with Jones + Jones Architecture, is designing the Jim Thorpe Center at Dickinson College, a new building rooted in Indigenous values and dedicated to truth-telling, education, and community.

As signatories of the AIA 2030 Commitment and the Architecture & Design Materials Pledge, we are advancing toward net-zero emissions for all new construction and major renovations by 2030. Our work combines energy modeling, material health, and performance tracking to deliver low-carbon, resilient design outcomes. Within our firm, we lead through action, reducing our operational footprint and supporting continual learning.
