Washington Crossing
Philadelphia, PA
Washington Crossing Historic Park required a new visitor center to replace an outdated facility that no longer supported the needs of visitors, staff, or educational programming. The goal was to create a contemporary environment that could better interpret the historic crossing while improving access and functionality. Commissioned by the Pennsylvania Department of General Services and the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, the project involved the renovation, expansion, and reorganization of the visitor center and surrounding site. O Z Collaborative redesigned the facility to approximately 23,000 square feet, incorporating a museum, exhibit and orientation spaces, a 250-seat auditorium, classrooms, event spaces, a bookshop, and climate-controlled artifact storage. The program is organized to support a clear sequence of visitor arrival and engagement.
High-performance systems, including geothermal heating and cooling, were integrated to improve long-term efficiency and environmental performance. Interior spaces accommodate both daily use and large-scale events. Site improvements reestablish key landscape features, clarify pedestrian circulation, and strengthen connections to the historic village of Taylorsville. Additional work includes provisions for bus access, tree replacement, and streambank restoration. The project creates a contemporary visitor center that supports education, enhances interpretation, and reinforces the historic significance of the site.
