Benjamin Franklin High School sought to modernize its career and technical education facilities to better prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and high-tech industries. Working with the School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Career and Technical Education, the project aimed to create a contemporary vocational training environment capable of supporting multiple technical disciplines. O Z Collaborative designed the extensive renovation of the school’s basement level to create a state-of-the-art vocational center organized around ten separate skill areas. The project transformed underutilized space into a specialized educational environment that combines hands-on technical training with classroom instruction.
Each shop area was carefully planned to accommodate the delivery, installation, and safe operation of specialized teaching equipment while integrating dedicated instructional space within the training environments. Circulation throughout the suite was designed to support efficient movement and operational safety for students and instructors. Infrastructure systems were coordinated to support the technical demands of modern manufacturing education, including power, ventilation, and equipment requirements. The design also allows flexibility for future adult education programming and potential evening industry use, extending the center’s role within the broader community. The completed vocational center strengthens workforce development opportunities for students while supporting the evolving needs of career and technical education in Philadelphia.
