Heitzman Recreation Center
Philadelphia, PA
The City of Philadelphia, through the Rebuild initiative, sought to renovate Heitzman Recreation Center to better serve the Harrowgate neighborhood. The existing 8,450-square-foot, one-story facility had been modified over time in ways that limited functionality and reduced the flexibility of its spaces. O Z Collaborative was selected to provide full architectural services for the renovation. Working with Impact Services and Rodriguez Consulting, the team led community engagement and developed a design strategy responsive to neighborhood priorities. Proposed improvements include new restrooms, reconfigured multipurpose spaces, HVAC upgrades, and enhanced amenities that allow the building to support a broader range of programs. The gymnasium is also being improved to accommodate more flexible community and recreational use. The project includes services from schematic design through construction administration. The renovation supports Rebuild’s mission to invest in neighborhood public spaces, creating a more accessible, flexible, and welcoming recreation center for the surrounding community.
