Philadelphia, PA
Martin Luther King High School expanded its career and technical education programs through the creation of a new culinary arts suite designed to support hands-on training and classroom instruction in food service and hospitality. Working with the School District of Philadelphia, O Z Collaborative designed a 5,500-square-foot instructional environment that includes a food laboratory, restaurant space, theory classroom, demonstration lab, and storage areas. The layout was carefully organized to support student collaboration, clear circulation, and efficient workflow within a fully functioning teaching kitchen.
The project integrated both new and repurposed kitchen equipment from the School District’s existing inventory, supporting sustainability and cost efficiency wherever possible. Building systems were upgraded to accommodate commercial-grade culinary equipment including a double-deck oven, range, griddle, walk-in refrigerator, and dishwasher. Instructional spaces were designed to support multiple forms of learning, allowing students to transition between classroom instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on food preparation activities. The completed culinary arts suite provides students with a contemporary training environment that supports career readiness and workforce development in culinary and hospitality fields.
