The Primrose School - Center City

Primrose Schools

Philadelphia, PA

Primrose Schools selected Center City Philadelphia for a new early education and childcare facility designed to serve families within a dense urban environment. Located within the first and second floors of a mixed-use office tower, the project required the transformation of commercial space into a safe, welcoming, and development-focused learning environment for young children. O Z Collaborative designed the fitout to maximize daylight, support child development, and address the operational challenges of an urban childcare setting. Large existing windows provide abundant natural light throughout the classrooms, creating bright and engaging educational spaces.

To compensate for the absence of outdoor play areas, the design introduces a central indoor “motor room” where children can run, climb, and ride on resilient flooring surfaces that support gross motor development. The second-floor layout organizes classrooms around the motor room in a loop configuration, allowing the activity space to function as the social center of the school. Security and privacy were carefully integrated into the design through a dedicated secured elevator and strategic use of window film within the active downtown environment. The project demonstrates how commercial office space can be adapted into a cohesive and nurturing early education environment that supports children, families, and educators in an urban setting.
