Reptile House
Philadelphia, PA
The Philadelphia Zoo sought to modernize its Reptile House to improve animal habitats and enhance the visitor experience. The existing facility no longer supported the environmental requirements of its collection or the expectations of contemporary exhibit design. O Z Collaborative led the renovation of the building and the design of 25 specialized habitats, each tailored to the specific needs of individual species. These habitats incorporate precise controls for temperature, humidity, and lighting, supporting animal health and long-term performance. The interior introduces immersive environments that reflect natural habitats, including themed settings inspired by Southeast Asia and the Everglades. These spaces create a more engaging and educational experience for visitors.
Mechanical systems were carefully integrated to support multiple microclimates within a single building, requiring a coordinated approach to HVAC design and environmental control. Circulation paths were improved to enhance visitor flow and visibility, while maintaining clear separation between public and animal care areas. The renovated Reptile House supports conservation, education, and animal care within a modernized exhibit environment.
