Rodeph Shalom - Sanctuary
Congregation Rodeph Shalom
Philadelphia, PA
Congregation Rodeph Shalom sought to restore its historic synagogue while modernizing its facilities to better support worship, education, and community use. O Z Collaborative led a multi-phase master plan and renovation effort beginning with the Byzantine Revival sanctuary. The project included restoration of the d’Ascenzo-designed interior and integration of new HVAC, lighting, sound, and life-safety systems. Seating was reconfigured to improve accessibility and function while maintaining capacity. Extensive building envelope work addressed masonry, roofing, and terra cotta deterioration, improving durability and long-term performance. A second phase focused on renovation of the 17,000-square-foot educational wing, enhancing classrooms, offices, and support spaces. The project balances preservation with performance, ensuring the synagogue continues to serve its congregation while maintaining its architectural and cultural significance.
