Temple Beth Zion Beth Israel
Philadelphia, PA
Temple Beth Zion–Beth Israel required a comprehensive approach to modernize its historic Rittenhouse Square synagogue while preserving its architectural character. The 120-year-old building faced challenges related to aging systems, structural conditions, and evolving programmatic needs. A multi-phase master plan was developed to guide renovations while allowing the congregation to remain active. O Z Collaborative led the planning and implementation of initial phases, focusing on life-safety upgrades, fire protection systems, mechanical improvements, and structural repairs.
Work within the sanctuary included restoration of ornamental plaster and decorative finishes, along with repairs to the heavy timber roof structure. Building envelope improvements addressed roofing and the restoration of a prominent copper-clad bay, while stained glass conditions were evaluated to guide future conservation efforts. Programmatic upgrades included the renovation of a ground-floor early childhood education facility, introducing updated classrooms and support spaces. The phased approach coordinates preservation, infrastructure upgrades, and program improvements, allowing the building to evolve while maintaining its historic identity.
