Perelman School of Medicine
University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, PA
The University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine expanded its research presence within the One uCity Square life sciences district through the interior fit-out of two floors of laboratory and office space. O Z Collaborative partnered with ZGF to complete the 58,000-square-foot laboratory environment, designed to support a range of biomedical research activities while encouraging collaboration among researchers. The laboratories are organized around large multi-user open lab environments supported by specialized spaces for tissue culture, cell culture, mRNA work, bacterial research, and other scientific functions. Dedicated areas for equipment and instrumentation support the technical requirements of contemporary research. Write-up spaces located adjacent to the laboratories provide areas for data analysis and focused work while maintaining close proximity to active research environments.
Office zones include a mix of private offices, shared offices, and open workstations that support collaboration among faculty, researchers, and students. Glass-enclosed conference rooms and smaller huddle spaces provide acoustically separated environments for meetings and research discussions. Shared amenities on each floor include lounges and pantries designed to support informal interaction and daily collaboration among research groups. The completed project provides the Perelman School of Medicine with flexible laboratory and workplace environments that support the evolving needs of biomedical research within Philadelphia’s growing life sciences district.
