O Z Collaborative is honored to share that the Hartranft Community Center has been featured as a Design Profile in AIA Philadelphia's latest issue of CONTEXT, themed The Architecture of Democracy.
The theme could not be more fitting. The restoration of Hartranft Community Center represents a meaningful reinvestment in one of North Philadelphia's historically underserved neighborhoods. Located in the heart of Hartranft, a historically Black and Latino community, the center had been closed for more than a decade due to deteriorating conditions. Its reopening reflects the shared vision of the Philadelphia Housing Authority and the City of Philadelphia to restore an essential public resource and create a welcoming, accessible place that responds to the needs and aspirations of the community it serves.
The project also carries important architectural significance. Adjacent to a neighborhood park, playground, and a building originally designed by the office of Oscar Stonorov, the site is connected to Philadelphia's rich legacy of socially conscious architecture. Stonorov championed housing and public spaces that strengthened working-class communities, a legacy that continues to resonate in Hartranft, where housing, recreation, and civic life remain deeply interconnected. Restoring the community center honors that history while preparing it to serve future generations.
O Z Collaborative was privileged to help translate that vision into a renewed civic asset. The rehabilitation focused on restoring the building envelope, replacing aging mechanical and plumbing systems, improving energy and water performance, and providing comprehensive ADA accessibility upgrades. A defining element of the project was the restoration of the indoor swimming pool, closed since 2009, which once again provides opportunities for recreation, wellness, and youth programming while symbolizing renewed public investment and neighborhood pride.
Environmental stewardship was integral to the project. Rehabilitating the existing structure preserved embodied carbon, minimized construction waste, and extended the life of the original building, while carefully selected materials, upgraded windows and doors, and high-performance building systems improve long-term durability and operational efficiency.
Today, Hartranft Community Center once again serves as a vital neighborhood destination for recreation, learning, wellness, and community gathering. More than the restoration of a building, the project demonstrates how thoughtful public investment, collaborative partnerships, and design can strengthen neighborhoods by creating places where people connect, thrive, and build community.
Our sincere thanks to AIA Philadelphia for recognizing this work, and to the Philadelphia Housing Authority, TN Ward, the City of Philadelphia, our project partners, and the Hartranft community for their vision, trust, and commitment to bringing this important civic resource back to life.
